With Loving Care (Sandhill Cranes)

This pair of Sandhill Cranes has nested for the last several years in Elberta Marsh and they bring their chicks (only two eggs are laid) to nearby fields. They search for grubs by probing in the ground and eat most anything that hops or crawls. The adults feed the chicks while they learn to forage for themselves, unlike baby ducks or chickens which feed themselves from the time they hatch. When it is time to migrate south the colts accompany the adults and learn the migration route, unlike other birds like shorebird juveniles which migrated separately and the route is programed in their genes. If the crane pair has two colts that survive to migrate they split up and a chick goes with each adult to different wintering areas.
